With garden fresh lettuce now ready in so many gardens and always available in the grocery store, I thought I would give you a recipe for the ever popular Ranch dressing. Store bought varieties contain upwards of 30 ingredients, MSG, many preservatives and some even contain propylene glycol which is also found in antifreeze!
A popular brand contains the following: Water, Soybean(s) Oil, Egg Yolks, Salt, Sugar, Vinegar, Food Starch Modified, Monosodium Glutamate, Phosphoric Acid, with Sorbic Acid and, Whey from Milk, Xanthan Gum, Garlic Juice, Flavour(s) Natural Buttermilk, (Buttermilk, Maltodextrin, Cream Cultured, Food Starch Modified, Salt, Flavor(s) Natural, Citric Acid, Lactic Acid, Karaya Gum), Color(s) Artificial, Calcium Disodium EDTA as Preservatives, Lactic Acid, Polysorbate 60, Spice(s), Parsley Dried, Lemon(s) Juice Concentrate, Contains Flavor(s), Natural (Milk).
This list of ingredients is appalling in light of the fact that Ranch dressing can be made with a few common spices and ingredients.
Homemade Ranch Dressing Seasoning Mix
- 2 Tbsp dried parsely
- 1 tsp dried dill
- 1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp pepper
Combine all spices in a small jar with a tight fitting lid and store in your spice cabinet.
To make Ranch Dressing:
- 1 Tbsp of Ranch Seasoning Mix
- 1/3 cup mayonnaise (I prefer Spectrum Mayonnaise)
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt or milk
- salt to taste
- 1 tsp lemon juice or vinegar (*optional, to add tartness, if you like)
Add more liquid (water, milk, lemon juice or vinegar) to get the consistency you like.
As with any recipe alter to personalize your preferences. Enjoy!
